Freemasonry is an institution which does not have a strong central authority so the rules differ from place to place. Some of the common rules are that Masons must be men who are adults and who believe in a Supreme Being, by whatever name that deity might be known. In some places the Mason must believe in a revealed religion, and in others must be Christian. Masons are usually forbidden to discuss matters of partisan politics and sectarian religion in Lodge--these issues must be treated very generally if at all. Freemasons must be men of good reputation, and can be expelled from the Fraternity if they are found to have committed crimes.
Freemasons use ritual to teach and to encourage thought. A ritual might be thought of as a play in which the spectator participates. Freemasons like to keep some of their rituals private so they will not be interrupted by people who do not know what is going on, and so the experience of discovery can be part of the ritual. Some Masonic rituals, such as Cornerstone Laying Ceremonies and in many places, Officer Installations, are open to the public and are not secret in any way.
If we told you, they would not be secret anymore, now would they?
It's what you learn after you've successfully petitioned a Masonic Lodge, duly elected, and completed three degrees.
There is no "true secret" in Freemasonry.

Secrets are, of course, secret and cannot be posted on a public site like this. But most of them are particular signs and words intended as recognition signs between members of the fraternity. At a philosophical level the idea of secrecy involves trustworthiness (can you be trusted to keep this secret?) and also touches on epistemology (what can you know?)
