usually presents with a descending pattern. The first sign is trismus, or lockjaw, and the facial spasms called risus sardonicus, followed by stiffness of the neck, difficulty in swallowing, and rigidity of pectoral and calf muscles. Other symptoms include elevated temperature, sweating, elevated blood pressure, and episodic rapid heart rate. Spasms may occur frequently and last for several minutes with the body shaped into a characteristic form called opisthotonos. Spasms continue for 3-4 weeks, and complete recovery may take months.
Common signs of tetanus in horses are having the third eyelid (nictitating membrane) stuck partially covering the eye especially as a response to loud sounds, an odd facial expression as though he is anxious due to facial muscle spasm, stiff gait, difficulty moving and eating. Symptoms can progress to collapse, extensive muscle spasms and death.
if you feel you may have tetanus, contact your doctor immediately to see what to do about the infection.

Tetanus can be treated once symptoms appear, but it may become a medical emergency. It is better to have a vaccination before beginning any work that could increase the risk of tetanus. Tetanus vaccinations provide years, even a lifetime of immunity.

Tetanus, a nervous system infection, can cause muscles spasms. A common name for tetanus is lockjaw, becausethe jaw is often the first muscle group to cramp or spasm. Spasm can happen throughout the body and may cause muscle tears. If the spasm occur in the muscles around the lungs it can result in breathing problems. Beyond muscles spasms, other symptoms of tetanus include fever, excessive sweating, irritability, and drooling.
