In contrast to surveys, a wide variety of information about behavior of people and objects can be observed. Seven kinds of observational phenomena are physical actions, verbal behavior, expressive behavior, spatial relations and locations, temporal patterns, physical objects and verbal and pictorial records.

The observation method may be used to describe a wide variety of behavior, but cognitive phenomena such as attitudes, motivations and preferences cannot be observed. Thus, observation research cannot provide an explanation of why a behavior occurred or what actions were intended. Another disadvantage is that the observation period generally is of short duration. Behavior patterns that occur over a period of several days or weeks are too costly or impossible to observe.

An example of observation studies is physical action in a shoppers movement pattern in a store.

Advantages of using surveys in sociology include the ability to collect large amounts of quantitative data quickly, cost-effectiveness, and the possibility of studying a wide range of topics. However, disadvantages may include low response rates, potential for response bias, and difficulty in capturing complex or nuanced information.

What are the types of survey in geography?

Types of surveys in geography include field surveys, aerial surveys, and remote sensing surveys. Field surveys involve collecting data on the ground through observations and measurements. Aerial surveys use airplanes or drones to capture images and data from above. Remote sensing surveys involve using satellites or other technologies to collect data without physically being present in the area.

What are the methods used to measure social class?

Social class can be measured using various methods, including occupation, income level, education level, and wealth accumulation. Sociologists often use these indicators, along with cultural capital and social connections, to classify individuals into different social classes. Additionally, researchers may use self-reported measures and composite indices to assess social class.

Should Sociologists should make use of only one theoretical approach?

No, sociologists should not limit themselves to only one theoretical approach. Different theoretical perspectives offer unique insights into social phenomena, and using a combination of approaches can provide a more comprehensive understanding of complex social issues. Flexibility in theoretical approach allows sociologists to adapt their methods to the specific research questions they are exploring.
