When the Spanish conquistadors ventured into the area in the early sixteenth century, the country was renamed Provincia De Nuestro Señor Jesucristo El Salvador Del Mundo ("Province of our Lord Jesus Christ, Savior of the World"). which was subsequently shortened to El Salvador.1
