Since The Bible does not comment on same-sex marriage, statements on the issue are made based upon interpretation of scripture and tradition. Certainly, gays and lesbians have been treated very badly in Jewish and Christian tradition. However, most Jewish sects and some Christian denominations do now support same-sex marriage.

Also, given both Jewish and Christian emphasis on monogamy, commitment and the importance of the family unit, it seems illogical to prevent gays and lesbians from forming families, particularly since nobody seriously believes they can be prevented from ever having sex.

It would make sense, however, to systematically oppose anything that benefits gays and lesbians in any way if you don't value their families and you do not consider them to be human beings.
