Hermit crabs are very soial so buy at least two. One gallon of space per SMALL hermit crab.

For substrate use coconut husk fiber mixed in with some sand, also have some climbing toys and humidity and temp between 70 and 80% / F.

Adaptations of the green crab include:

  • They have a patterned shell which provides camouflage.
  • The shell is hard and without joints, preventing the crab's body from drying out, and keeping it safe from predators.
  • They are equipped with nine pairs of gills for obtaining oxygen.
  • They are nocturnal, which limits the number of predators (especially seabirds).
  • Green crabs are excellent foragers, meaning they can adapt to a wide variety of available foods. Unfortunately for other crabs, they also feed on larvae of other crab species, thereby eliminating competition for food.
  • The crabs move up and down the shoreline with the tide, meaning they spread out over a very wide area, staying away from deep water predators like octopuses.
  • They shelter under rocks during the day, keeping them away from bird predators.
  • They reproduce at a prolific rate. Not only can a female produce up to 200 000 eggs in one breeding cycle, but the larvae can survive up to 80 days, building new populations as they spread out over the shoreline. This is probably how the species became established in so many countries, with the larvae able to survive for a long period in adverse conditions.

Hermit crabs (both on land & in the seas) are unlike "true" crabs in the way that they don't have a hard outer covering (exoskeleton) on their entire body, but rather only about half. As a result, they need to wear a discarded gastropod (like a snail) shell to protect their soft abdomens.

Hermit crabs are also unique in the way that they have adapted gills so they can breathe air. Though they are all born in the sea; they can not live there after their first molt & will drown if submerged too long.

I only know of one, their gills have hardened so they can breath air but it needs to be humid air because they're still gills, not lungs.

How did the hermit crab gets its name?

It's term 'hermit' is not because it doesn't like other hermit crabs. The hermit crab actually loves being with other hermits. It is called hermit crab because it is only one hermit crab in the shell. It's term 'hermit' is not because it doesn't like other hermit crabs.
