That is a loaded question, if ever there were one.

I hope that others can chime in with advantages, because I can't think of one. Rather, there seem to be only disadvantages of living in a society controlled by a church. This is one of the many reasons that, in the United States, we have Constitutional separation of church and state (government).

A society controlled by a church is called a religious state. History has shown us time and time again that religious states result in intolerance, persecution, violence, and death.

Countless wars have been fought in the name of religion when religion controls or attempts to control the government.

Churches and religious groups are theocratic by nature and not democratic. Leadership is not selected nor representative of the society. Instead, it is selected by an elite few members of the church, promoting a culture of secrecy and corruption. The aim of the government controlled by religion is to perpetuate the church and not for the betterment of its society.

Churches and religions in control of their societies stifle free thinking and progressive ideas.

History and current events tell us that there has never been an instance when a church controls the politics of a country that its society is better off.

Having looked at the negatives of a religious state, it is important to look at the benefits of religion of belonging, as an individual, to a faith. Churches give people a purpose and belief system by which we can operate our individual lives. Churches take care of their own and strive hard to help others. Churches work very hard on behalf of mankind, being some of the first to come to the assistance of peoples in need. Churches provide a much-needed support system for people who have no support systems. Churches help us to have a hope for the present and a vision for the future.

Churches have a powerful and wonderful role in society and, by and large, improve society so long as they are not in control of a government or trying to control the government.

How did the crusades lead to the Black Death?

The plague left holes in the society as people died , so the living began to fill the holes left in business and life. This meant that life improved for the lower classes and they lived better. The Cursaders brought back new ideas, inventions, foods, and thinking. This changed society as a whole and that is reflected in the art and science. I think one other thing added to this was the invention of the printing press. This invention allowed people to read ideas and thinking that otherwise they wouldn't have been able to do since the church controlled the educational/thinking of the society. With the invention of the printing press the church lost control of ideas.
