The San Francisco Chronicle was a newspaper started in 1865 in San Francisco by Charles de Young and Michael de Young. In less than 10 years, it became the largest newspaper west of the Mississippi. It built the first skyscraper in San Francisco in 1889. It was known for its columnists such as Dear Abby, Charles McCabe, and Paul Avery who was known for his reporting on the Zodiac Killer and the Patricia Hearst kidnapping.
