Not all crabs live near the shoreline. A few live near the shoreline while others live on the ocean floor. It's just the habitat they prefer.

Antarctica is the biggest desert and the only animals that live there are penguins and seals and sea lions. Most of these live along the coast and not in the interior of the desert.
Lakes have more species because there is more freshwater and room to live. Plus life isn't swept away with a current. Animals can try to fish easier here and there is a shoreline for animals to live on and a still surface for plants to grow upon.
