However, most of these were not done on purpose. He was literally trapped on an island with Calypso, who was a beautiful nymph, for 8 years. Just him and Calypso. His men were stupid in the fact that they ate Helios' cattle when told not to. This insulted Helios, who requested Zeus to punish Odysseus. Also, to get past Scylla, he HAD to sacrifice six of his men in order for Scylla not to destroy the ship. Finally, he blinded Polyphemus, who was Poseidon's son (no known to Odysseus), to escape his island. Odysseus was cursed accordingly each time he insulted the gods though, so it evened out.
