The 'English Tabby Cat' is now called the 'Moggy' or 'Domestic Shorthair' or 'Domestic Longhair'. The term Tabby now refers to a certain coat pattern a great deal of moggy cats have, but many years ago they were called Tabby Cats as it was common to see cats - usually with the Tabby coat pattern - roaming the streets.
Because Domestic Shorthairs/Longhairs have such a mixed genepool, these cats vary greatly in size, shape and personality. The average size is 4kg, but many can be smaller or larger than this.
Common characteristics of a tabby cat's back include distinctive striped or swirled patterns, usually in shades of brown, gray, or orange. Tabby cats may also have a "M" shape on their forehead and a dark line running down their spine.
A "tabby" cat has a "tabby" coloring. That is what "tabby" means.
