To be polite, males should always say "krup" at the end of sentences, females say "kah". That's what the 'k' stands for in the phrases below. I've written these out the way they sound to me, but there are websites and smart phone apps that will play the audio files for you.

  • Good morning, day, afternoon, night etc: Sa-wa-dee k
  • Very hot (weather)!: rawn mahk k
  • Very hot (spicy)!: pet mahk k
  • Very expensive!: peng mahk k
  • How much?: Tow rye k (tow rhymes with cow)
  • Thank you: Cop koon k
  • No thanks: My ow k (literally "don't want it", useful when pestered to buy)
  • I'm hungry: Hew cow k
  • I'm thirsty: Hew nahm k
  • Delicious!: Arroy mahk k
  • Have you some coffee: Me gaffay my?
  • Tea: nahm cha
  • Iced coffee: gaffay yen
  • 1, 2, 3, 4, 5: Neung, song, sam, see, hah.
  • 6, 7, 8, 9, 10: Hoke, jet, bait, cow, seep. (8 is like "bet" with a long vowel)
  • 20, 30, 40, 50: yee- seep, sam-seep, see-seep, hah-seep (three ten, four ten etc. and similarly up to...)
  • 100: neung roy
  • 1000: neung pann
  • I would like..: Tong can.. (eg, Tong can nahm k, I would like water please)
  • Where is the toilet?: Hong nahm (room water) yoo nigh k?
  • Where is the police station: Sat-tah-nee tam-ruat yoo nigh k?
  • I love you: rack koon k
