Carrier oils are oils that you add essential oils to for application to the skin. Most essential oils are not recommended for direct application without substantial dilution.

The most common carrier oils are light of fragrance, easily absorbed by the skin and often bring something beneficial to the mix.

I tend to use sweet almond oil in most of my blends. It is easily obtainable, relatively inexpensive and not prone to people being allergic to it.

For dry skin you can use: cocoa butter, olive oil, palm oil or peanut oil.

For all skin types you can use: calendula infused oil, jojoba oil, or soybean oil.

For oily skin you can use grape seed oil, sunflower oil or walnut oil.

How is a carrier oil used with essential oils?

Almost all oils come with a dilution rate. If you have a reference book for essential oils it will often say to dilute the oil 50:50 or maybe 80:20. That means that for every drop of essential oil you need to add an equal amount of carrier oil. The best carrier oil to use is almond oil or coconut oil. You start by placing the desired amount of carrier oil into your non-dominant hand, then add equal drops of essential oil. Then with the dominant hand mix the oils together in three clockwise circles. Now you are ready to place it on your body.

What can you use as a dispersant for a bath with essential oils?

Essential oils do not always blend easily with water, which is why a dispersant is useful. Spa Technologies offers three bath oils with blends of water-dispersible essential oils. I offer these organic products on my Transcendence Design website. A link is attached. Sherri Silverman, Ph.D. ________ another person's answer to the question: Any other oil (that you would want in your bathwater) would work as a dispersant or "carrier" oil for the essential oils. Usually carrier oils are chosen by price, availability, and lack of smell when they are used with essential oils, but for your purposes mineral oil, olive oil, grapeseed oil (my favourite) would work famously. Remember if you are mixing oils mix the weakest scent first and stronger scents later to get the most of the aroma. Enjoy!
