Russians often celebrate Easter and Christmas. But they also celebrate Ivan Kupala on June 23. They make wreaths of herbs. They would swim at dawn to purify their souls. Another holiday is Maslenitsa. This is a time to burn a straw figure of Maslenitsa and eat pancakes. This holiday is a week before Lent.

Russians have many customs about courtship and weddings. Matchmakers will not make matches during the day, only after sunset. Weddings can not take place on the 13th of any month. Matchmakers would give bread to the bride's family. If the bride's parents accepted the deal, they cut the bread. If they didn't want their daughter to marry the man, then they returned the bread.
