Most all Civil War Rifles were Muzzleloader single shot rifles. Few Soldiers carried side arms (Guns). A really fast soldier could get of 2 shots in about 6 seconds in a pinch. Guns normally required that each gun be loaded with black powder a patch and a ball. a tamping rod forced everything in place in the barrel. By the time WWI came around rapid-fire guns like the machine gun, auto loader pistols and multi shot rifles had been invented. Bullet casings made it easier to load guns and rifles. No more separate power, patch and ball were required. Better sights, Rifling in the barrel (Grooves) and bolt action all made a contribution to the WWI weapons.

New guns have a better fire rate and have more attachments you can say. Old guns had horrible reloading and a lack of ammunition. New guns have enough and a good amount of ammunition.

Firearms were first created over 1000 years ago- that would have been AROUND the year 1014. Let's think about this for a minute. The settlers at Jamestown VA (1607) had guns. The American Revolution (1776) had guns. The American Civil War (1861) had guns. World War I and World War 2 (1917 and 1941) had guns. So there would certainly have been guns in 1965.
