  • Diamond frame. The classic style made up of a main and a rear triangle. It's the stiffest/strongest design for a given weight. Has a high top tube forcing the rider to swing his leg over from behind the saddle.
  • step-through frame. The traditional woman's specific frame. Easier to get on, but flexier/weaker for a given weight.
  • mixte frame. An intermediate between the two above. Has a low top tube. Can be stepped through with moderate difficulty and is almost as stiff as the diamond frame.
  • suspension frames. Sus frames play by entirely different rules, but usually have some sort of main triangle. They get heavier, the suspensions sap a little energy from the rider when pedalling. But gains incomfort and traction makes it worthwhile in some cases.
  • recumbent frames. Recumbent bikes are ridden in a laid back position. Better aerodynamics slightly better neck/back ergonomics. Also heavier and less visibility in traffic.

A really stiff frame will have good power transfer, but will be uncomfortable on coarse roads. A flexible frame will be comfortable, but won't accelerate as snappily.

A frame made of round tubing will be relatively inexpensive to make, while a frame made of more advanced shapes can be more areodynamic and stiffer - and more expensive to make.
