There are four different kinds of llamas:
Chilean- from Chile, of medium height they have very thick wool, or fiber.
Classic- Very tall, lightly built, with short fiber.
Bolivian- On the short side, very long fiber, and hair in their ears.
Argentinian- A mediun sized llama, with fine fiber, and no hair in ears.
I hope this helps.
Or of the lama (single "L") family there are four species
Vicuna
Guanaco
Alpaca
Llama (using double "L")
There are "classic" llamas, which are the older style and most commonly used for packing due to their short "guard hairs", not long, silky wool. There are Suri llamas which have tight curls and waves. They are mostly used for their wool and showing. It is soft and desirable for knitting and yarn. There are the "normal llamas" which have fluffy, long wool. They are great pets, 4-H animals, and show animals. They are used for wool and packing also.
There are two breeds of alpaca,
(1) Huacaya
The popular type of alpaca, with fleece growing perpendicular to the body
(2) Suri
The less common type of alpaca with a dreadlock-style fleece with individual locks hanging from the body.
They would be the Ccara and Lanuda. Other "varieties" include Chilean, Bolivian, Argentine, and Suri.
In North America, llamas are divided into Light-Wooled, Medium-Wooled and Heavy-Wooled.
llamas are alpacas and they are a part of the camel family.
