Open Office can open and edit documents created and saved with Microsoft Word in Words native formats of .doc and .docx. Word cannot open OpenOffice's .odt format but Open Office can save as .doc (several versions), .docx and other file types that MS Word can recognize. You will find some incompatibilities if you have some advanced formatting, some table formatting etc.
