Whale and dolphin watching, fishing from the shore, a jetty, a pier, or from a boat, sailing, Scuba or skin diving, motor-boating, water-skiing, operating remote-controlled 4-wheelers or aircraft, cooking out (grilling), flying kites, roller-skating (if there's a walkway designated for it), biking, hiking, and people-watching are fun things to do while in the vicinity of a beach. It really depends on which coast you are visiting. For example, some parts of California's coastline are inaccessible, due to private property and/or rocky cliff sides.
