I've been a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints (the "Mormon" church) for all 23 years of my life, and I have NEVER heard anything about listening only to hymns or church music. Occassionally there will be a lesson or sermon on media and entertainment, which quotes the Church standard of only participating in entertainment that "uplifts...[and] will help you to have good thoughts and make righteous choices" and to avoid music that "drives away the Spirit, encourages immorality, glorifies violence, uses foul or offensive language, or promotes Satanism or other evil practices." As for bumping and grinding at Church dances, that is strictly prohibited in Church policy. If you see that at a Church dance notify one of the adult chaperones immediately. Some hip-hop music will fit within the standards of the Church, but every song played at a Church dance is supposed to have prior approval of both lyrics and beat from a Church leader.
