It�s not really your fault, but like anything else you bring into close contact with your body for long periods it needs to be cleaned periodically. With fine jewelry this isn�t a big deal, but with costume jewelry there are a few things you�ll have to keep in mind while cleaning your pieces.

To get started cleaning you�ll need:

• Toothbrush (preferably medium softness)
• Mild Dish Soap
• Tarnish Remover (Tarn-X, etc.)
• Small Can of Black Paint (Valspar�s Latex Enamel is the best)
• Small Paintbrush
• Polishing Cloth

The first thing to be done is to remove any dirt and grime on the piece. Skin oil, dust, dirt, and skin lotions can all accumulate on a piece over time. To break this up use the toothbrush with warm water and dish soap to gently brush away the detritus. If you still are not getting it as clean as you would like you can take it to a local jeweler or dentist that has an ultrasonic cleaner. This cleaner will create sonic waves that will shake the dirt off of your piece. Ask the owner of the cleaner not to use harsh chemicals or turn the heater on. The chemicals and heat in conjunction with the sonic shaking may cause any glued stones to fall off out of your jewelry.

You can use a tarnish remover if the piece is made up of a metal that is prone to tarnish. If you use a chemical based tarnish remover then only dip your piece for a few seconds. If you dip it for more than a few seconds then you will dull the jewelry. While more expensive, a system that uses an electrolytic solution to reverse plate the tarnish works better and is easier on the piece.

If your costume jewelry piece had a treatment to make it look antique it may come off during cleaning. You can recreate this look by using a bit of black paint. Take the paint and dab it onto the top of the can. Mix it with a drop of water and paint onto the piece where you want the effect. Remove the excess with a piece of tissue paper. Use cheap tissue paper for this job. More expensive types will leave behind lint.

Once everything is clean, you can polish the piece with a polishing cloth. If you notice any black flecks of paint from your antiquing you can scratch this off with a fingernail or dip some tissue paper in a bit of rubbing alcohol and wipe if gently. This should have your costume jewelry looking brand new with only a little bit of effort.
