Japan is an archipeligo - essentially the top of a mountain ridge that rises above sea level in many places, each place forming an island in the chain. The Japanese archipelego begins from just north of Taiwan and ends just offshore of Russia (the last Japanese-controlled island is still a matter of dispute between these two countries).

75% of the region is mountainous and there are a few plains. Most plains in Japan are alluvial plains. The country is urban. Almost all of its population lives in a city. There are approximately 127 million people living in Japan.
