Consuming food during the middle ages was very different than the world today. Many people ate lying down and preferred purees, ground meat, meatballs, and other meat that was easily able to digest. A plate full of meat was a typical upper-class meal and lower-class meals usually consisted of breads with sauces that were low in fat, proteins, and vitamins. As far as appetizers, meatballs were, again, more common to eat before the main meal as well as anything that was usually sweet or savory.

They would start a feast with small meats. Like black pudding (blood sausage) and meat pies. Anything could be made into a pie: kidneys, small birds, mincemeat.
