Alaska has eight national parks (some are also preserves), three national monuments, and three national preserves not connected with any national park. California has seven national parks (or eight, if you count Sequoia and Kings Canyon as separate), six national monuments, and one national preserve. Neither, at least in the U.S.A. National parks and national preserves are both administered by the National Parks Service, but these two entities have legally defined different regulations. For example, hunting is permitted in national preserves but not in national parks. Thus, Everglades is a national park, while Big Cypress is a national preserve -- even though both protect the everglades of Southern Florida. In the U.S., there is no legal definition of a "national reserve."
