Among the many wonderful compositions of Beethoven, the symphony that stands out for its popular appeal ever since written is his 5th Symphony, with its frighteningly grand repetitions and overall power. By contrast, a nearly equally famous piece is his Moonlight Sonata, a piano-piece that demonstrates an exquisitely light touch, tranquil and even dreamy in character.

If you mean most famous, I would consider the Fur Elise, Piano Sonata No. 8, Symphonies 5 and 9, and Minuet in G (written 1795). Beethoven considered his Hammerklavier sonata to be his best sonata. He also considered his last symphony, the Choral (No. 9) to be one of his greatest works, which the audience at the premiere also loved.

Symphony No. 3, Symphony No. 5, Symphony No. 9, All of his piano Sonatas and Concertos, and the Overture to "Egmont".

Just a short list. There's a whole lot more out there, almost all of his music could be considered "Important".

Among Beethoven's compositions were the piano sonatas, especially well-known ones such as the Pathétique, Moonlight, Waldstein and Appassionata.

Beethoven's 9 symphonies are all brilliant, but perhaps the better known ones are the "Eroica" (his third symphony), the rich and penetrating Fifth Symphony (Symphony No. 5 in C minor), and the Ninth Symphony (Symphony No. 9 in D minor) which, unlike preceding symphonies, actually made use of choral parts in the well-known "Ode to Joy".

Beethoven also wrote a short, romantic composition, the Bagatelle in A minor, that became known as "Für Elise". It was written in April 1810 for Therese Malfatti, whom Beethoven was considering marrying at that time - a marriage which never eventuated.

Equally famous are his one and only Opera, 'Fidelio' and the 'Archduke Trio', or Piano Trio no.7.

Beethoven wrote a number of piano sonatas, among which are the better known Pathétique, Moonlight, Waldstein and Appassionata sonatas. He wrote piano trios, a piano quartet, string trios, string quartets and sonatas for solo instruments and piano.

Beethoven also wrote other shorter pieces such as the short, romantic composition, the Bagatelle in A minor, that became known as "Für Elise".

He wrote around 160 songs, actually known as "lieder", with piano. His only opera was Fidelio.
