Gen. McClellan was in command during the Pennisular Campaign that included a few battles and some that didn't happen. Williamsburg, Yorktown, Drewey's Bluff, Hannover Courthouse, Battle of Seven Pines, and Seven Days Battle. His command culminated in the Battle of Antietam. Soon after the battle, President Lincoln visited Gen. McClellan at the battle field and annonced his replacement. In 1864, McClellan ran against President Lincoln, thus his only political battle. General McClellan was a cautious general and tended to avoid battles. But he was responsible for training the Union army that would continue to have an impact on the battles that followed.
There were different generals for different battles. Some Union generals include Robert Anderson, Irvin McDowell, Ulysses S. Grant and George B. McClellan.

As the new Union general in chief, George B. McClellan made some important changes. He appointed General Don Carlos Buell to lead the Department of Ohio and General Henry Halleck to run the Department of Missouri. These generals would play a key role in the Union's war efforts.
The Army of the Potomac had several commanders over the years. Some of them were Brigadier General Irvin McDowell, Major General George B. McClellan, and Lieutenant General Ulysses S. Grant.
The South fought fought major battles on northern soil at Antietam. Then there was the Battle of Chickamauga, the 3 Chattanooga Battles, and the Battle of Gettysburg

In general terms, General George B. McClellan served only four months as general in chief. During his tenure there were several major developments. The Peninsula campaign was tried and failed, which led to the Second Battle of Bull Run. This in turn was followed by the South's march into Maryland and into the Battle of Antietam. This was yet another significant military operation. McClellan was relieved of duty some seven weeks after that horrific battle.
Some of the major battles of World War I include the Battle of Tannenberg, the Battle of Arras, The Battle of Verdun, and the Battle of the Somme.
