There is the double bass, also known as the string bass and upright bass (to distinguish it from a Bass Guitar). It is the lowest string instrument.

The other instrument that commonly plays bass, or low, notes is the cello. It is somewhat higher in pitch than the bass but still is big enough that it has to sit on the floor, supported by an end pin.

Should only experienced players play a 5 string bass?

Not necessarily, whether or not a person should be playing a 5 string bass is totally subjective. For some people, beginner or not, that extra string can be too much. For others an extra string isn't going to be much more difficult than a 4 string bass. What it really comes down to is personal preference, if a beginner bass player wants to play a 5 stringer than why not?

What instrument family is the double bass?

It is a plucked, fretted, stringed electrophone. In other words, it has strings which are plucked; the strings are pressed down behind metal frets to determine pitch, and the instrument's sound is amplified electrically. Less technically, it is most closely related to the electric guitar, with some input from the orchestral double-bass, and it has acoustic ancestors including the Mando-bass, the Bass Banjo and the Contrabass Balalaika. The actual Acoustic Bass Guitar, however is a recent invention, dating from no earlier than the late 1960s.
