Contemporary computers mostly use either Intel or AMD processors. The Pentium brand of Intel processors is the most popular in the world.
Linux can be run on a variety of processors, including several that have been used for desktop systems. The most notable would be Intel and AMD x86 processors, as well as PowerPC processors (used in older Macs. ) Other processors used in desktop systems now or in the past and supported by Linux include Motorola 68k processors, Alpha processors, MIPS processors, and ARM processors.
There are several "main" differences, that are important, depending on what context you are interested in them for. PowerPC processors are primarily manufactured by IBM and Freescale. Pentium processors are manufactured by Intel. PowerPC processors can operate in both little-endian and big-endian modes. Pentium processors (and compatibles) are little-endian only. PowerPC processors are used in some servers, game consoles, and in embedded kiosks. They were also used in Macs before 2005. Pentium (and compatible) processors are used in most desktop computers, the original Xbox, servers, and some embedded kiosks.
32-bit processors
Almost all CPUs that have been used in personal computers since 1981 have been capable of supporting a desktop environment of some sort. This includes the Intel 8088 and descendants, the Motorola 68000, SPARC processors, PowerPC processors, ARM processors, Itanium processors, and Alpha processors. There are hundreds of models within each family, making a list of all of the ones that could support a desktop environment implausible.

The Socket AM3 Connector is compatible with the AM3 and AM3+ processors, but not AM2 or AM2+ processors, which have 940 pins instead of the 941 pins of the AM3/AM3+.

Any x86 processor from the 386 on up to present-day processors can be used with Windows 98.
