Hinduism isn't really a rules based religion, not like there are a "ten commandments" or anything like that. Belief in reincarnation is a foundation of the religion, and this forms the guiding principal: to live by a pure mind and actions, (to create good karma, so to speak) so that you will be reincarnated into a better life in the next lifetime. It is also the foundation of the caste system, which has fragmented Indian society into 1000's of social groups from the poorest to the richest, each social position being a karmic outcome from lives past, that you're really stuck in for this lifetime.
Industrial development, and modernization in recent times have weakened the hold that the Caste System has on Indian society, but it is still a frequent cause of social division.
In addition to karma, there is also the concept of dharma, which is a kind of rule system for social, ethical and spiritual conduct that is gained from spiritual teachers. In Hinduism, spirtual attainment is considered the highest path in life.
