I would definitely check out Dante Alighieri's epic entitled the "Divine Comedy" which is his personal "trip" through purgatory, the seven circles of Hell, and Heaven. In each circle of Hell, Dante describes the punishments inflicted upon those who have committed the seven deadly sins. For example, those who were guilty of being Prideful had large boulders strapped to their backs, forcing them to bow and face the ground, this was so they would never be able to look down on another person instead. Those who committed Envy were forced to wander with their eyes sewn shut. Those who were guilty of sloth were stuck in a tar pit and so forth. It doesn't seem so funny after all, but it sounds rather interesting.
Obviously they are not called deadly for nothing.
