What are some pros and cons of Christopher Columbus?

The advantages were few. Columbus, to the day he died, thought he had found India. Little did he know how close he was the North America. He didn't find gold, little bits, but nothing major, but he wanted to make slaves of the natives. He also chopped a few native hands off for not bringing him gold. He brought unknown disease to the natives that will kill whole tribes. His landing gave Spain a foot hold in the Americas that will lead to sending more explorers. So, the one advantage can be chalked up for Spain. All the disadvantages are on the side of the natives for the reasons stated above.

Pros: His discovery began the Age of Exploration of the New World by Europe, culminating in European settlements in North and South America, which eventually created the modern nations we know today, including the United States. Slaughters of thousands in pagan rituals by Aztecs and other native peoples were brought to an end. Christianity was brought to the New World peoples.

Cons: Many Indians were enslaved in mines before it was decided that Africans were "stronger" and should replace Native Americans as forced labor. New diseases were unwittingly introduced from Europe, which devastated the Native populations. The different settlers (Spanish, English, French, Dutch) clashed with and ultimately drove away many of the Native peoples into the poorest lands.
