He says it is horrible. The animals labor tirelessly for the humans in exchange for a meager amount of food. The animals are forced to give up their young, and are inevitably killed before they reach a mature age. Horses are whipped, pigs are bred to be killed for pork and bacon, and cows milk is taken to feed humans. With the exception of Old Major, the animals have lived miserable lives under the Dictatorship of the farmer, Mr. Jones. Old Major calls upon the animals, telling them that a revolution will happen soon and change the horrible state they live in.

When was Animal Farm written?

From Shmoop Literature on George Orwell's Animal Farmhttp://www.shmoop.com/intro/literature/george-orwell/animal-farm.htmlIn a NutshellPublished in 1946, Animal Farm is one of George Orwell's most famous works, a political satire about animals and the oppressive humans they overthrow. The tale mirrors the Russian Revolution of the early twentieth century, as the working class (animals) overthrows the leadership (humans) to run the farm themselves, only to find that their new leaders are more oppressive than the old. This scathing parable mounts a hugely poignant attack on political idealism, making its points through humor, not to mention the talking animals.
