If you have a basement get to it! And if you don't the smart thing to do is if the tornado is farther away, travel to someone's house of whom has a basement. And if THEY don't then the best thing to do is get to an interior room or hallway on the lowest floor, or even better, lie flat in a bathtub or stand in a closet for maximum safety. But if you're ever caught in a tornado you should watch out for debris because that's the leading cause of death in most tornadoes.

Does wind stop before a tornado hits?

In some cases, the wind may calm or stop momentarily before a tornado hits due to the storm's dynamics. This is known as the "calm before the storm" phenomenon. However, it is not a consistent or reliable indicator of an impending tornado, so it's crucial to rely on other warning signs and alerts to stay safe.

Why do you need tornado sirens?

Sirens are sounded in some areas to warn of a potential tornado in the area so they can get to a safe place before it hits. Information on tornado warnings is broadcast over TV, radio, and the Internet, but this is only useful to those who are tuned into these sources when the warning is issued. The sirens get the message out to everyone in the area.

What kind of raining is in a tornado and hurricane?

Hurricanes produce very heavy rain, enough to pose a very serious flooding risk. The rain is shredded into smaller droplest by the powerful winds and appear to move in an almost horizontal direction. Heavy rain, often accompanied by hail, generally prececes a tornado, but often stops before the tornado hits. The tornado itself is often in a rain-free portion of a thunderstorm. However, some tornadoes are rain-wrapped. The rain can range anywhere from a drizzel to a torrential downpour that blocks the tornado from view.

How are people warned about a tornado before it happens?

Most tornadoes form within a larger circulation called a mesocyclone that usually exists for some time before a tornado forms. Doppler radar can detect this rotation, and warnings issued baded on that. The cicruclation of the tornado itself may also be detected before it touches down. Warnings can then be issued through TV and radio broadcasts, online outlets, smartphone apps, and, in some towns, sirens.

Are there thunderstorms before a tornado?

What happens when a tornado hits the water?

Some tornadoes break up when hitting a large body of water but some keep on going making a water tornado and occasionally picking up fish which later fall down and makes it seem as though it was raining fish. What happens when a tornado spins faster?

When a tornado spins faster its winds carry more force, so the tornado can cause more severe damage than it could before. Under some circumstances the increase in speed can trigger a phenomenon called vortex breakdown. In this process air at the center of the tornado begins to sink, forcing the tornado to widen. The collision between outward moving air from the center of the tornado and inflow toward the tornado then results in the formation of a series of smaller vortices within the tornado.
