What happens when dogs eat garden variety slugs...

Vomiting and diarrhoea for at least 12 hours, dehydration due to this. The dog may eventually vomit out the slug. They don't seem to be able to digest them. I have 2 large dogs and they both eat just about anything, I don't use slug poisons on my land but the slugs on their own seem to be very disagreeable to both dogs when they very occasionally are stupid enough to ingest one. The dogs don't seem to suffer any lasting problems but get really sick at the time. Thankfully has only happened a few times.

The main thing is not to feed the dog when he is sick but make sure he has plenty to drink. This helps reduce dehydration and allows whatever is upsetting the dog to be vomited out. I came on here loking for answers, so this is as much as I know. Hope this helps someone anyway.

I am not a vet, so if your dog is sick for more than a few hours or gets worse, seek expert help.

In New Zealand we have a Sea Slug, a few inches in size that wash up on the beach, that contain tetrodotoxin and these are quickly fatal to dogs.

Dogs natural scavenging behaviour has yet to evolve fully, and the owners must make up the deficit.

The tetrodotoxin may be produced by a symbiotic bacteria, but that may be of academic interest to the dogs.

supplement. Dogs can eat most things that humans can, but some common things are poisonous to them - notably chocolate. They cannot metabolize the Theobromine. So an unusual sea food item might trouble them.

What is lead poisoning and what are the symptoms?

Lead poisoning occurs when people ingest lead. There can be lead in soil and some types of house paint. Also, some types of costume jewelry and toys made out of lead can cause poisoning. Touching lead and putting hands around the mouth can cause it to get in the body. Symptoms in severe cases can be digestive problems, headaches or fatigue. The symptoms tend to mimic other conditions, so testing needs to be done to see if it is lead or not. Blood tests and urine tests are done to check for lead poisoning.
