Both Athena and her uncle Poseidon wanted to claim a certain city-state, so the only way for them to settle it was to give a gift to the people of the small city-state. Poseidon gave the gift of a spring of water to the people, but the people did not want the gift because they could not drink the water for it was oh so salty. Athena gave the gift of an Olive Tree, the people were more pleased with her gift because the tree could give them food, oil, and wood, so Athena won and named the city Athens.
