The novel Speak contains many examples of irony. It is ironic that Melinda has confidence at the end of the book as opposed to her earlier lack of it. It is also ironic that at the end of the book Andy cannot speak, but Melinda can.
"The Fire" carried by both the Man and the Boy inside of them symbolizes the only love left in the world. It could also symbolize the hope that they must carry inside of them in order to survive. The Cannibals- Symbolize the end of civilization, or what the world has turned into The Sea- Symbolizes death as a bridge to the afterlife, something to hope for, or relates to the phrase "the grass is greener on the other side" The Road- Hope, courage, good vs. evil (whether you choose the life path of good or the life path of evil)
When Ponyboy and Johnny run away to the abandoned church. The church is a symbol of righteousness, goodness and purity. And Pony and Johnny killed someone (bad) and they go to a church (good).
There are a few examples of irony in The Road.
FIRE: The boy and the man constantly talk about carrying the fire, when the world around them was partly destroyed by fire.
GOD: When Ely first sees the boy, because he doesn't see well, he thinks the boy is an angel. He says this, and then later says he doesn't believe there is a god.
SURVIVAL: The man is almost too ready to give his life up for his son, because without the guide and help of his father or some other authority, the son doesn't have a very good chance of faring by himself.
OCEAN: When the boy and the man reach the ocean, it is cold, barren, and grey. They also find a boon here: a boat filled with provisions. The boat of supplies contrasts the dead and grey ocean.
SHOPPING CART: There is a bit of irony in the fact that the man and boy prefer to carry their scarce findings in a shopping cart. Before the disaster, shopping carts could be easily filled with food and basic supplies. Now, the boy and the man experience great difficulty in finding the simplest things.

Much of the dramatic irony in Shakespeare's 'The Tragedy of Hamlet, Prince of Denmark, centers around his pretending to be mad so that he can plan revenge on his Uncle Claudius. As a result initially only the audience knows he is simply feigning madness. In the scene between Polonius and Laertes, Polonious speaks about trust and loyalty, but orders his son followed once he leaves.

One example of irony in the novel Everlost is that Mary Hightower, who sets herself up as the ruler of Everlost to protect children, inadvertently becomes the antagonist who prevents children from moving on. Additionally, Nick, who initially views Everlost as a prison, ends up thriving there and finding a sense of purpose. Lastly, the land of Everlost itself, which is meant to be a place for souls in transition, becomes a stagnant and dangerous realm.
