Whisky is made from fermented grain and there are various types. It can be made with barley, barley malt, rye, malt rye, wheat, or corn.If the grain mix is more than 51% corn, is aged in new charred oak barrels and is bottled at 80 proof (40% ABV), it's Bourbon.
You can have it neat (nothing added on it), on the rocks (with ice cubes), a dash of water, or it can be used in a variety of cocktails (scotch whisky + amaretto (e.g. Disaronno) = Godfather or scotch whisky + Drambuie = Rusty Nail to name some IBA official cocktails)

Scotch whiskey is any whiskey (regardless of grain type etc.) that is made in Scotland and produced according to the Scotch Whisky Regulations. Single whiskey is whiskey that is produced anywhere in the world (unless it's Single Scotch Whisky, Single Irish Whisky etc.) and that comes from exactly one distillery. The distillery may bottle a single barrel or may mix together many different casks - as long as these all come from that one distillery, it's still "single".

The most common way I've heard is with Orange Juice on the rocks. Put a little ice (crushed would be best) mix in some Buchanan (depending on how strong you want it) and the rest with orange juice. My favorite way to mix it is with Pineapple Juice and topping it off with a little Cranberry Juice.
Yes, you don't need a pet to mix things~ :D
