What are some important uses for lead?
The most important use of lead is in batteries. It is also used as weights. Ballast in sailing ships, diving weights, car tyre balancing weights. Also it is used as a component of some metal alloys. The most familiar of these is solder. Lead is used in making pigments (though now it is banned in a lot of uses due to health concerns).

What paints are lead free?
All house paints sold in the United States and Canada are lead free. The only paints that contain lead are used in industrial applications and are should not be available for purchase to the general public. Lead is used in some artist oil whites, however, this is rare and the artist who uses them has to pay a premium to acquire them . Lead is not used in water based paints.
