Some songs that may relate to Ishmael Beah in "A Long Way Gone" include "War" by Edwin Starr, "Redemption Song" by Bob Marley, and "Imagine" by John Lennon. These songs touch on themes of war, violence, redemption, and peace, which are also central to Beah's memoir.

Well first Hurt is not a song (by) Johnny Cash he covered the song which was originally done by the band Nine Inch Nails. As far as which is the better song its all opinions but if you look at covers of these songs (which have both been covered a lot) Hurt has been covered by way more artists then redemption song. In rolling stones top 500 songs of all time Redemption song came in at 66 while Hurt failed to make the list. Hope this helps... P.S Fun fact Johnny Cash also covered Redemption Song....
August Burns Red is a metalcore band so they don't really have any "slow" songs, but their new album Rescure and Restore has a couple songs with clean vocals. I also like the song "Redemption" from the album Messengers. It has powerful lyrics and mostly clean vocals.
