Spectroscopy is basically the study of the spectrums of visible and non-visible light rays. Specifically, it is determining the output of radiation an object has along the spectrum. This is called a wavelength.
Why is the leaf is green?

It depends what the marks are made by. Ink, magic marker, paint, etc. can be nullified by different spectrums of light. Other things cause other problems.

The Sun gives off all spectrums of light, from microwaves to gamma rays, the ozone layer only lets through the infrared through UV spectrums. And it's the UV rays that cause skin damage. Too much UV rays, and you'll be burned to a crisp (not literally, but as a figure of speech)
