'Split Contributions' is the short-hand term for having the amount of contributions for a specific action totaled on your profile.
If you go to any profile (including your own if you have an account), you will see that it shows how many answers, edits, etc., were made by a single contributor, and then the grand total.
Old contributions were not affected. All of the points from old contributions were migrated to the new system.
There are currently no rewards, other than recognition on your Bio Page.

Similarly, any alternates that you split whilst on a previous mission do not count towards your total either. It is only the alternates that you split from the start date of your mission that count towards the mission. You can check how many alternates you have split by clicking on "My contributions" on the blue menu and filtering to "Alternates (other)".
