"Stays" are stiff pieces of material inserted into garments to achieve a certain shape. The stays in Victorian corsets were made of baleen, from whales. In the 1970s, stays in men's shirt collars were made of plastic, inserted into little fabric slots on the underside of the points of the collar to keep them flat. I'm wondering if these were introduced for polyester blend fabric shirts because they could not be starched and ironed to keep the collar points flat.

There is a great definition of the more general "stay" at http://www.sewingcity.com/glossary/generalglossary.html
