The fingernails are made of hardened cells of the epidermis, your outer skin layer. The cells have keratinized into a hardened, scalelike covering to protect the tips of your fingers, and the edges help you to pick up small objects.

If you're talking about pure substances, then the answer is atoms. Some pure substances are composed of only one kind of atom and are called elements. Compounds are pure substances composed of atoms of more than one element. Examples of elements include hydrogen (H), oxygen (O), and carbon (C). Examples of compounds made with those elements would include glucose (C6H12O6) and sucrose (C6H22O11).

Protons and neutrons are made of what?

Protons and neutrons are made from smaller substances called Quarks. A proton is made from 2 "Up quarks" and 1"Down quark" whereas a neutron is made from 2 "Down quarks" and 1 "Up quark".

How can there be so many different kinds of substances in the world?

There are so many different atoms or atoms with different numbers of protons which makes different elements or different substances. Everything is chemical and made up of chemical reactions. And the chemicals are all made up of atoms. Atoms combine to form elements, and elements combine to make up compounds and mixtures. For example, water. Hydrogen, an element itself, combines itself to another chemicals, which is Oxygen, to make a compound. Which gives you the result with water. Everything in the world is made up of chemical reactions. Some come naturally and most are made with mixtures and compounds. As you may know, there are tons of individual elements and when they are combine into bigger compounds they turn into substances like liquid, gas, or solid. It's all part of chemical reactions.

When the two substances are put in the same container they do not attract each other. Why does this happen?

Either one or both of the substances are not magnetic.
