Subtropical Highs
Subtropical Highs
Another name for the area of subtropical highs is the horse latitudes. These areas are characterized by descending air and relatively calm winds. They are located roughly around 30 degrees latitude north and south of the equator.
The 7 components of the general circulation pattern in the atmosphere are: the Intertropical Convergence Zone (ITCZ), the subtropical highs, the subpolar lows, the polar highs, the polar easterlies, the westerly winds, and the jet streams.
Uplift is the process in which structural highs are created (e.g. mountains). Tectonism is largely responsible for uplift.
...the high-pressure belts known as the subtropical highs, such as the North Pacific High and the Azores High.
High pressure zones are typically found around 30 degrees latitude in both hemispheres, known as the subtropical highs. They are also found at the poles, known as the polar highs. Additionally, there are high pressure systems associated with descending air in regions of surface high pressure, such as the Siberian High and the Bermuda High.
