Horses can get overheated just like people. Refrain from riding in the midday heat of Summer, (especially in an uncovered ring with sand, because sand reflects the heat and light, which is dangerous to both horse and rider), and make sure he gets plenty enough water. It's also vital to walk your horse out before putting him back in his stall. Putting him up hot and with a high rate of breathing is just ASKING for colic, not to mention it's mean. And be wary of riding in the excessive cold. If you plan to work up a sweat in the ring when it's cold out, remember to spend extra time warming up with your flat work. His joints can get stiff and creaky, too. If you're both sweaty and out of breath after the ride, walk him out until his chest feels cool and his breathing is normal. Putting a horse up hot when it's cold out is oh-so-dangerous. So: If it's hot out enough so that you feel light-headed, don't make your horse go through it too. And: If there's snow in the ring, don't be foolish. Make it a day for sugarcubes and brushing.
Horses Require a diet of: * grain (ask your vet or someone knowledable about horses to see what is best for your horse) * hay (in the winter) * grass every season except for winter (hay can be fed during these seasons too * minerals (good for the horses, they require minerals so it is important to have it for them, dont force them to eat them, they eat them when they need to) * salt block (have a salt block in a place where the horse can lick if he desires too, same as the minerals, do not force him to eat it.) * electrolytes (not mandatory but a good thing to have) Treats: * Carrots (yum) * Apples (yum) * Molasses * oats
