Ovulation occurs when the egg is released from the follicle, or site of growth. Some women are able to tell when they might be ovulating by noting certain changes in their bodies, such as the presence of a thin, clear vaginal mucus that comes from the cervix just prior to ovulation, around cycle day 10 to 12. (The start of menstruation is counted as the first day of a woman's cycle.) Other women may notice a twinge of discomfort or brief pain on the right or left side at the time of actual ovulation as the egg is released from the ovary. Women can also use the basal body temperature method to determine, after the fact, when they have ovulated. This is done by taking your temperature by mouth when you first wake up and plotting it on a temperature chart each day. A woman's temperature usually rises from .8 to one full degree Fahrenheit just after ovulation has occurred. This temperature shift is brought about by hormone changes associated with ovulation. You can also use an ovulation test kit, which may be purchased over the counter. Use the kit to test a urine sample during your expected midcycle time to verify hormone changes that indicate ovulation. The most likely days to become pregnant in a woman with a 28-day cycle are days 10 to 14. If a woman is having a problem getting pregnant and sees an obstetrician-gynecologist for infertility, the physician may do other tests -- including a biopsy of the lining of the uterus -- to prove that ovulation has occurred.
