Of the four canonical Gospels - Matthew, Mark and Luke are known as the synoptic gospels because they contain a lot of the stories - in some cases with almost the exact same wording. Matthew was written primarily to the Jews, Mark to the Romans, Luke to the Gentiles.
The Gospel of John focuses less on specific historical events (ex. Jesus' birth) in the synoptic Gospels, but zeroes in on the signs that Jesus is the Messiah. It starts out claiming that Jesus is the Logos or Word of God and continues showing signs pointing to his divinity as much as his humanity.
