There's the wedding cake which explains the workings of the criminal justice system that shows how cases get filtered according to the seriousness of the offense: their are four tiers, the bottom tier is the misdemeanors which is 90%, the third tier is the felony which is less serious to nature or ones in which the defendant has not previously had trouble with the law, the second one is the is the most serious criminal cases such as murder, and the top tier are the few cases that are considered celebrated cases like murder.

then there is the criminal justice funnel which explains that a large number of people are arrested, many of whom go through a process of filtering, ultimately go to trial or are sentenced. so if their were 1000 crimes, 500 would be unreported and the other 500 would be reported to the police. of the 500 that were reported 400 of them would be unsolved and the other 100 would be arrested. 65 out of the 100 would be adults that would be considered for prosecution and the rest remaining, 35, would be juveniles that would go to juvenile court. out of the 65 cases, 25 of them would be dropped and 40 of the cases would be prosecuted and 10 would jump bail or be absconded. now since 10 are dropped the 30 cases go to trial, 1 would be acquitted, 27 plead guilty, and 2 are found to be guilty. after trial, the 29 that were either found or plead guilty, the 29 are sentenced, 9 are placed on probation and 20 adults are incarcerated. in the juveniles part out of the 35 that go to court 30 would be dismissed or put on probation while the other five would be incarcerated. going back to the adults

so basically what the funnel says is that off the 1000 crimes that are committed, only 5 juveniles and 20 adults are incarcerated.
