To protect the rights of freedmen. The Fourteenth Amendment guaranteed equality under the law for all citizens!
Two rights that were included were the Freedom of Speech and Jury Trials.
Under the supreme court case Miranda vs Arizona, in which it was declared that those being arrested are to be read their rights to them, including the right to remain silent and the ability to get an attorney. This can also be seen in the Fifth Amendment.

Until the 13 and 14 amendments slaves had no rights. They were considered property. Women also had few rights and did not get the right to vote until the 19th amendment.

The 14th Amendment established due process and equal protection under the law. It also makes the rights in the constitution guaranteed in state matters.
The Fifth Amendment guarantees the right to confront your accuser in court. It is just one of the rights guaranteed under due process.
