∙ 10y agoThe Moment magnitude scale (which replaced the Richter scale) and the Modified Mercalli scale are used to determine the strength of an earthquake.
The Moment magnitude scale is used by seismologists to rate the energy released by earthquakes.
The Modified Mercalli scale is used to measure the intensity of an earthquake, and the amount of damage it causes. This value is derived from reports by witnesses of the earthquake, the damage caused to buildings and other infrastructure and the measured ground accelerations from seismometers.
Please see the related questions for more information.
One is the Richter scale, which measures waves and gives us a measure of the magnitude of the earthquake. The other is the Mercalli scale, which is based on the amount of damage done.

The Mercalli scale, which measures the visible effects; and the Richter scale, which measures the energy given off by the earthquake, are the two most common ways of measuring the size of an earthquake.
The strength of an earthquake is typically measured using the moment magnitude scale (Mw), which takes into account the seismic energy released by the earthquake. This scale provides a single number that represents the overall size of the earthquake. Another commonly used scale is the Richter scale, which measures the amplitude of seismic waves.
The amplitude of seismic waves from an earthquake is is measured by a seismometer. From this an estimate can be made of the amount of energy released by an earthquake (this is known as magnitude). The magnitude of an earthquake is controlled by the amount of energy stored within the deformed rocks of the crust. This is in turn a function of the elastic moduli of the crust, the cross sectional area of the fault rupture zone and the amplitude of the displacement on the fault.
they are detirmened how high the s wave is
There are actually 3. But 2 of them are The Mercalli scale measures an earthquake's intensity which is the strength of the ground motion in a given place. It is not very accurate though. The Richter scale measures the size of seismic waves. It gives it a rating from 1 which is the lowest(can't be felt) to 9(deathly destruction) These 2 scales are very similiar.

Richter scale
Richter scales are used to measure the magnitude of an earthquake. There is no specific unit used for earthquakes. I hope this helps. =)
Richter or local magnitude scaleMoment magnitude scaleBonus:Surface magnitude scale
Earthquake strength is measured using a magnitude scale. For small to moderate strength Earthquakes (< magnitude 7) the Richter scale is used. For Earthquakes between 7 and 8 the body and surface magnitude scales are used and for earthquakes larger than 8, the moment magnitude scale is used.

Lilly, who is a scientist, used a seismograph to determine the strength of the earthquake that had just hit Haiti.

The scale used to measure the strength of an earthquake is called the Richter scale
Depends on it's magnitude which can range. Seisometers are used to measure the Magnitude of an earthquake. Magnitude is it's strength.
